The Best Electric Nail File

There’s something therapeutic about manicures and pedicures. Then, there’s the satisfying surge of confidence that comes from sleek, professionally done nails. Whether you’re a nail tech providing professional services or you want to take over your nail care at home, an electric nail file, sometimes called an electric nail drill or e-file, can give you impressive (and fast) results. They can remove gel and acrylic nail polish without chemicals or grunt work on your part as well as help you perfectly shape, buff, and fill your nails. Many models come with several bits and sanding bands, so you can start as soon as you open the box.

We reviewed dozens of electric nail files to find the best and most reliable models on the market. We considered their power, portability, and ease-of-use. We also took a good look at the kind of bits, their sizes, and how many were included with the initial purchase. In the end, we’ve found some great e-files that make quick work of nail care.

Best Electric Nail File Overall: Makartt Electric Nail File

The Makartt Electric Nail File leaves nothing to chance. This solid e-file has the power and torque to breeze through polish with professional results. It reaches a maximum speed of 30,000 RPMs. While most of the time you won’t need that much speed, acrylics can be a tough barrier to break, and this model can do it. We love that you can set the speed with a dial or use the foot pedal for customized speed adjustments. You can also control the direction of the bit rotation using a switch on the power unit, making this model usable for right or left-handed people.

While this model has some serious power, vibrations are kept to a minimum to protect your hand and wrist. The low vibrations also reduce noise. The handpiece design includes ventilation to prevent uncomfortable heat build-up. This powerful e-file is designed for grinding, sharpening, and polishing as well as removing gel nail polish and filing natural nails. As far as ease-of-use, we like that the manufacturer provides a tutorial video to go along with the instruction manual.

Makartt Electric Nail Fil Key Features:

  • Variable speed from 0 to 30,000 RPMs
  • Includes five (5) bits and thirty (30) sanding bands
  • Dial or foot pedal speed control
  • Rotation control switch
  • Low vibrations and sound
  • Ventilated handpiece

Best Portable Nail Drill: MelodySusie Portable Electric Nail Drill

Best Portable Nail Drill
MelodySusie Portable Electric Nail Drill
Lightweight enough to carry in a purse, this compact drill keeps your nails looking amazing no matter where your travels take you.

The MelodySusie Portable Electric Nail Drill hits all the right marks with its compact design. An adjustable dial on the cord allows you to select a speed that’s anywhere from 0 to 20,000 RPMs. That same control unit contains a switch that changes the rotation direction, giving you quick control while you work. However, it’s designed to protect the motor with a short two-second delay before the bit changes directions.

This model is designed to keep sound, vibrations, and heat to a minimum. That protects you and anyone for whom you might be doing their nails from discomfort or hearing issues. The MelodySusie comes with six bits and enough sanding bands to get you started. Ultimately, with this type of model, it comes down to portability. The on-cord controls and lightweight design make it easy to take this nail drill almost anywhere. No matter where you are, at home or on a business trip, your nails will look professional and well cared for.

MelodySusie Portable Electric Nail Drill Key Features:

  • Variable speed between 0 to 20,000 RPMs
  • On-cord speed and rotation control
  • Excellent handpiece ventilation
  • Lightweight design
  • Includes six (6) bits and six (6) sanding bands

Best Budget Electric Nail File: Cadrim Electric Nail Drill

Best Budget Electric Nail File
Cadrim Electric Nail Drill
This nail drill provides professional results at half the price.

The professional-grade Cadrim Electric Nail Drill doesn’t skimp on features and comes at an affordable price. Let’s start with the variable speed that ranges from 0 to 20,000 RPMs, using a dial on the power unit. That range provides enough power and torque for grinding, polishing, carving, and sanding. It comes with six drill bits and six sanding bands. While the bits are adequate for most needs, you’ll need to purchase extra sanding bands simply because they have to be thrown away after each use.

A switch on the power unit allows you to change the rotational direction. However, the manufacturer doesn’t recommend doing this frequently within a single session, as it can damage the machine. Finally, the Cadrim comes with a stand for the handpiece. While that’s not a necessity, it looks professional and keeps the handpiece at the ready while you work for quick access.

Cadrim Electric Nail Drill Key Features:

  • Variable speed from 0 to 20,000  RPMs
  • Includes six (6) bits and six (6) sanding bands
  • Rotational control
  • Stand for handpiece

Best Professional Nail Drill: ALLE’S Professional Electric Nail Drill

Best Professional Nail Drill
ALLE'S Professional Electric Nail Drill
This powerful nail drill not only works well but keeps the bits and handpiece organized by storing them directly on the power unit.

The ALLE’S Professional Electric Nail Drill powers through nail work without hesitation. Before we jump to the RPM’s and control features, we have to talk about the onboard organization and storage. Many nail drills come with a separate case for their drill bits and handpiece. This model has a handpiece holder and slots for each drill bit on the power unit itself. However, it also includes a case for the bits and a tabletop stand for the handpiece, giving you some extra options. Whether you’re working at home or in the salon, you’ll be able to keep your tools at hand and organized.

With variable speeds ranging from 0 to 30,000 RPMs, you can take on almost any nail job. Even if you’re at top speeds, the aluminum handpiece ventilates through emission holes, so there’s no overheating. Despite high speeds, this model stays quiet and keeps vibrations at a minimum. Finally, there’s a switch to change the rotation direction, which makes this model usable for both right and left-handed users.

ALLE’s Professional Electric Nail Drill Key Features:

  • Variable 0 to 30,000 RPM
  • Onboard handpiece and drill bit storage
  • Lightweight aluminum handpiece
  • Six (6) drill bits and extra sanding bands
  • Rotates in both directions

Best Electric Nail Drill for Toenails: Beurer 24-Piece Professional Manicure & Pedicure Nail Drill Kit

Best Electric Nail Drill for Toenails
Beurer 24-Piece Professional Manicure & Pedicure Nail Drill Kit
With more bits and attachments than most nail drills, this model can do toe and fingernails with professional precision.

The Beurer 24-Piece Professional Manicure & Pedicure Nail Drill Kit comes with an impressive array of attachments and bits. What it lacks in power, the Beurer only functions between 2,000 and 5,600 RPMs, it makes up for in versatility. And, when we’re talking about toenails, lower speeds aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Sensitive toes need a gentle touch like that of the Beurer.

It rotates in either direction for use by either right or left-handed people. However, you need to set the direction before turning on the drill. The handpiece design makes it easy to use whether you’re working on your feet or hands. Plus, a shield protects you from inhaling dust. The final feature that makes it a great model for toenails is the built-in LED light. The extra light illuminates tiny toes so you can work without damaging the nail bed.

Beurer 24-Piece Professional Manicure & Pedicure Nail Drill Kit Key Features:

  • Variable 2,000 to 5,600 RPMs
  • Ten (10) attachments with sanding bands
  • Dush shield
  • Rotates in both directions
  • Built-in LED light

Who Should Buy an Electric Nail File

Electric nail files allow you to work faster and more efficiently than with a manual file. They’re used by professional nail techs as well as those who love to do their nails at home. If you’re a professional, they’re an absolute must for providing your clients with quick, sophisticated nails. With the right bit like a high-quality carbide bit, you can easily remove acrylics. Other bits can be used to repair cracks, shape acrylics, or work on natural nails.

Professionals aren’t the only ones who may want an electric nail file. If you’re meticulous about the care of your nails, you can purchase a professional or a portable model for home use. Doing your own nails can be a great way to relax or pamper yourself after a long day. Your finger and toenails also make a statement about who you are and your attention to detail, which makes looking great part of your personal image.

Best Overall Electric Nail File
Makartt Electric Nail File
Strong enough for the professional and easy for beginners to use, this e-file has everything you need, including impressive power and torque.

Important Features to Consider

An e-file should have a few important features. Here’s what to consider as you’re selecting an electric nail file for professional or home use:

  • Comfort and fit. The hand piece should feel comfortable in your hands. If it’s too big, heavy, or out of balance, it will be harder to control. Along those same lines, it should have minimum vibrations and sound. Vibrations can aggravate your joints and potentially damage your client’s nail bed. A loud electric nail file can be irritating for both the user and the person having their nails done.
  • Power. It can be tough to determine the power of an electric nail file. Most manufacturers advertise RPMs, but revolutions per minute aren’t a true indicator of power. Power has to do with watts and torque. If the drill doesn’t have enough power, you’ll have to turn up the RPMs to get better, faster results. However, higher speeds present more risk for nail damage. Unfortunately, most manufacturers don’t advertise the watts. Difficult to remove polish like gel and acrylics need high power and high RPMs. If the machine has both power and speed, it can probably tackle most nail jobs.
  • Variable speed control. Electric nail files range in speed from 0 to 35,000 RPM, with some of the higher-end professional models going even higher. For precision work and on sensitive areas of the nail, like around the cuticle, you don’t need high speeds. You should only use high speeds after you’ve gotten some experience under your belt. Some models have an adjustable speed control dial on the power unit, while others have a limited three to eleven speed settings. Some of the most flexible models have a foot pedal that allows you to manually control the speed. With these models, you can use both of your hands while adjusting the rotation speed.
  • Shank size. Look for a model with a standard shank size that will fit common 3/32″ bits. If you get a model with a custom shank, you can only use the bits made by the manufacturer. In the end, you’ll save yourself money when it comes time to buy replacement parts or add bits to your collection.
  • Warranty and tech support. Most e-files come with a one-year warranty. Make sure the manufacturer offers tech support as well. Anything as complex as an e-file has the potential to break down, especially if you’re using it often.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an electric nail file, and how does it work?

An electric nail file functions similarly to a rotary tool used for woodwork but on a finer, less powerful scale.  It has a power unit and hand piece with a shank into which you put bits of different sizes and shapes. You can put on a mandrel and then slip on a sanding band to gently file and smooths the nails. Or, you can attach one of the other bits and work around the cuticle or shape the acrylic nails much faster than you could with a manual file. They’re used by professional nail techs and home users alike.

How do you use an electric nail file?

E-files can be used for any number of nail care methods. But, the best place to start is by cleaning the nails. You can use a small cone or barrel bit to clean under each finger or toenail. Since you’ll be close to the skin when cleaning, it’s best to stick to low RPMs. Next, file the nail for length. Always start at the edge and work towards the center. While filing, it’s important to keep your finger or your client’s finger well secured, so there’s no slipping.

After you file the nails down, use a barrel bit to remove any polish. Metal bits, barrel or any other shape, should not be used on natural nails. Natural nails need felt or another soft bit to prevent damage. If you’re removing polish from acrylics, start at the tip of the nail and move towards the cuticle. Be sure to clean the sidewalls. Once it’s time to do the cuticles, put on a cone bit and set the e-file to a low-speed. Use a light touch to clean the cuticle area.

Using the right speed is critical, especially while you’re working near the cuticles. Avoid hitting the nail wall as it can damage the nail and cause ridges to form. Once everything is cleaned, trimmed, shaped, and buffed, you’re ready for polish.

How do you remove gel polish from acrylic nails with electric files?

If you’re removing gel polish from acrylic nails, use a large barrel bit. On a medium speed, feather (a light back and forth motion) the bit across the surface of the nail, slowly removing the nail polish. The feathering motion allows heat to escape while you work. Once all of the polish has been removed, you can apply a new coat of polish. If you’re changing the shape of the acrylic nail, you can use the same barrel bit to adjust the shape.

Which is better, a glass or crystal nail file?

Both glass and crystal nail files are gentler on the nails than a standard emery board. Glass nail files can be used in a back-and-forth motion rather than in a single direction like an emery board. They’re gentler on the nails and last longer than most emery boards. Crystal nail files have an even finer grit than a glass nail file, and they have to be used in a single direction like an emery board. However, they wear out quickly. In fact, most people’s nails will be fine with a glass nail file unless they have weak or sensitive nails. In which case, a crystal file might be a better choice.
